We have all seen the calls to “eat local,” and with food costs skyrocketing, there’s one more reason to do a little gardening. But, costs aside, eating locally grown foods is better for the environment chiefly because less energy was spent shipping it to your table.
We will delve further into the locavore (or, to some, “localvore,”) movement another time, but suffice it to say that eating locally grown foods improves your envirohuman impact and provides consumers with fresher foods, too!
But why not eat the ultimate “local” food? As spring comes and leads to summer, you may want to plot your path to planting one or two items.
Last summer, I had both a simple tomato and green bell pepper plant. Depending upon your climate and cooking tastes, you might want to consider other fruits or vegetables.
Once you know which plant or two you want to start with (and for the first-time gardener, start small), do some simple research into what particular variety you should plant and what planting time is ideal for optimum output. Do some research online or ask someone at the plant nursery for advice. Also, many plants have a wealth of information tagged to them, including sun and watering needs, as well as what type of soil works best.
Now you are ready to begin gardening and reaping the rewards! Talk about fresh produce! You can literally pick something from your garden, wash it, and enjoy its fresh flavor in a matter of minutes.
